Digital media industry to touch Rs. 200-b by 2020: E&Y

The digital media industry in India has arrived. E&Y, the global consultancy major, has forecast that the industry would set to touch the Rs. 200-billion mark by 2020, with the digital advertisement spend growing at 23-28 per cent. The number of smartphones would touch the 520-million mark by then, giving people access to the web. “By 2017, the country will have more than 350 million smartphones from 167 million in 2015. Low-cost phones and roll out of 3G and 4G broadband infrastructure would drive access to the web. This, in turn, would drive digital media consumption,” E&Y has said in its latest report Future of Digital Content Consumption in India. The Report was released here on Tuesday at the FICCI’s Media and Entertainment Business Conclave. The report has identified eight major trends in the digital media industry that are going to accelerate the growth. The trends include proliferation of smartphones, content, consumption by people in rural areas, digital gaming and regional e-celebrities. The report, however, asked the media and entertainment companies to do much more than just reacting to the trends. “They need to be able to see emerging trends that will dictate the future of content and how they will impact established business models for ad-supported, subscription and pay-per-use content monetisation,” it said. The companies and other stakeholders must develop much richer relationships with audiences. They will have to invest in technologies that will enable them to analyse audience data. Broadband penetration E&Y has said there would be a significant increase in broadband penetration. “It will go up to 40 per cent from 14 per cent. This will...

Digital marketing driving big data, cloud, IoT - Survey

2nd Watch research says high volumes of data being used for digital marketing campaigns Digital marketing programs are driving adoption of big data, Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud technology, research shared today by 2nd Watch reveals. During the first half of July, 2nd Watch surveyed 500 IT and marketing professionals of mid-size and large organizations. It said the results show that big data, cloud and IoT are a “primary driver” for digital marketing strategies as teams use high volumes of data from applications, websites and machines for their campaigns. Fifty percent of survey participants said they will likely increase their use of big data to supplement their digital marketing. Meanwhile, a third of respondents said they will allocate resources meant for other marketing programs to big data-based ones because of the success of previous programs. When it comes to IoT, 40 percent of those surveyed reported being in the “beginning” stages of leveraging machine data for digital marketing, according to 2nd Watch. In addition, the managed cloud provider said 27 percent of participants expect to start an IoT-based digital marketing project “soon”. Another 53 percent said they will probably “expand” IoT-based programs, 2nd Watch added. The biggest obstacle to big data and IoT-based programs seems to be cost as 40 percent named it as their biggest “consideration”, according to 2nd Watch. Another 21 percent said executives did not see the value in the technology, and 20 percent of participants named a lack of in-house technical skills as the biggest challenge. The use of cloud for digital marketing is also apparently popular. Forty-one percent of survey respondents said they...

Govt blocks 32 sites over security concerns; DailyMotion, Vimeo, GitHub, Weebly to be unblocked

(Source: TechCircle.in) Indian government has blocked 32 websites citing national security concerns, as they were allegedly carrying anti-India material from terror groups such as ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria). “We have blocked some websites, as there were serious national security concerns,” a government official. The websites that have faced the crackdown include popular video sharing platforms like DailyMotion and Vimeo, while some of them have been allowed to function after removing the objectionable content. The website were purportedly containing material about Areeb Majid, an alleged ISIS member who was arrested by NIA, and three others hailing from North Karnataka’s Bhatkal area. Sources said the websites were being used to induce Indian youth to join ISIS and for spreading news about purported death of certain persons while fighting Allied Forces in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq. Another senior official said the crackdown followed an order from Mumbai Court, which was approached by Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) with a plea to block some websites carrying anti-India content. During its probe into certain terror cases, the ATS had received information that some websites were carrying anti-national content, the official added. Meanwhile, BJP’s IT Cell National Head Arvind Gupta also said the websites have been blocked on the advice of ATS as they were carrying material from the ISIS. “The websites that have been blocked were based on an advisory by Anti Terrorism Squad, and were carrying anti-India content from ISIS,” Gupta said in a tweet. He further said: “The sites that have removed objectionable content and/or cooperated with the ongoing investigations are being unblocked.” A list of 32 websites,...
